HALP, I don't know where to start with choosing a hairstyle

Updated: Jan 31, 2020

OH snap, girl I got you!

Starting your search for hairstyles can be overwhelming. I mean it's a big day, it's photos that last a lifetime and there are SO many choices.

I have a philosophy when it comes to my clients.. Less is more. Your hair should be slightly fancier then how you would get yourself dolled up on your best day!

THERE IS AN EXCEPTION to this rule

If you are having a bombshell hollywood style wedding, or you love a classic style then DO IT UP!

I’ve created a flow chart sort of thing to help solve this problem and hopefully point you in the right direction with a starting point to start your search

Let's start with the basics, ask yourself a few questions to see if up or down is the direction you wanna go

1. On a daily basis do you wear your hair up in a top knot or down?

If you answered hair down ask yourself one more question

- When I wear my hair down, can I get through an entire evening without slinging it up in a pony? (if you realized ya you can't wear it down all night.. you choose hair up by default)

Now did you answer Top knot?

if so ask yourself one more question

- when I'm wearing my hair up when I go out, do I secretly wish I wore it down?

if you answered hair up move to question 3

if you answered hair down move to question 2

2. Down hair (do any of these statements hold true for you when your hair is down)

my hair is my security blanket

I feel sexy with my hair down

OMG i hate my ears

I love the length of my hair i want it to look long

I love how i feel with some of my neck showing

I party pretty hard and i’m a huge hugger

I sweat like a NY construction worker and my wedding is in july or august

I love when my hair is put together

I’m getting married ON A MOUNTAIN

i want to feel elegant

I want to stop traffic on my wedding day

If you chose more Blue options this is the style that might suit you

If you chose more Pink options this is the style that might suit you

3. hair up (do any of these statements hold true for you when your hair is up)

I love looking effortless like I woke this way

A chignon is the timeless, I want to feel timeless

I love how i feel with some of my neck showing

I party pretty hard and i’m a huge hugger

I sweat like a NY construction worker and my wedding is in july or august

I’m getting married ON A MOUNTAIN

I love when my hair is sleek and put together

OMG i hate my ears

I want to feel elegant

I’ve been growing out my hair so I want my updo to look fuller

I want to stop traffic on my wedding day

I love my natural curls

If you chose more PINK options this is the style that might suit you

If you chose more Blue options this is the style that might suit you

Now these may not be the EXACT styles your thinking of, BUT they should help you at least take a step in the right direction

Tips and Tricks for finding the right style for you

1. Be realistic! If you have hair to your shoulders we can't make it look longer, and some updo's we just can't fake. If you have fine hair make sure you look up hairstyles for fine hair. The best way to do this is to search a) your hair color b) the thickness/texture of your hair c) updo or downdo

It's important to be specific BUT not too specific

2. Take into consideration the events for the day, how much of a hugger you and your family are and if you plan on busting a move or two on the dance floor. I've been known to style a brides hair to effortlessly come undone throughout the night for a romantic tousled lived in look, and on the other side, I've created styles that lasted well into the next day. Talk to your stylist about longevity of the style but BE REALISTIC there is only so much magic we can do with hairspray, and then it's in your hands

3. Yes searching for hairstyles in YOUR hair color and texture is an absolute must, if I had a nickel for everyone that showed me a textured blonde with highlights rocking a boho braid, just to be disappointed that "it doesn't look the same" on their one tone brown hair, well I'd have a very heavy wallet.

4. Just remember, we are beauticians not magicians. Once your hair is done, no matter how much hair spray, setting spray, powder, gloss, you name it, once you step away it's up to you to maintain the integrity of your hair. Dodge group hugs, careful when your traveling in the car to not rub against the seat back, your viel can even cause your hair to come undone due to friction. Rings get caught, buttons, all sorts of things, none of which we can control.... My rule of thumb for weddings, get through the ceremony, the photos, the speeches and once it's time to cut loose, WHO CARES!!!! live it up, if your checking your hair by that time, your not doing your wedding right!
